Common red paintbrush (Castilleja miniata): Paintbrush likes to grow in sunny, well-drained soil. Its interesting flowers appear in spring in shades of red and orange. Plants are around 1 foot tall. Paintbrush is a hemiparasite – it has special roots that attach to nearby “host” plants, robbing water and nutrients. For best results, plant within a foot of a “host”. Good choices are yarrow, wooly sunflower, and Puget Sound gumweed. Perennial. $4 for a 4” pot.
