SUMMARY:Partner Event | Collaborative Conservation: Lessons from Five Years of Habitat Restoration at Mount Grant - and What’s Next
DESCRIPTION:Join the Conservation Land Bank and the San Juan Islands Conservation District for a conversation on collaborative\, landscape-scale restoration at Mount Grant Preserve on San Juan Island. Over the past five years\, partners have worked together to restore fifteen acres of grassland\, savanna\, and woodland habitat as part of the broader San Juan Islands Landscape Scale Restoration project\, funded through the Washington Department of Natural Resources.* \nThis talk will highlight lessons learned from implementing restoration across multiple ownerships and management goals\, including approaches to prescribed fire\, invasive species management\, and re-establishing native plant communities. We will also explore how partnerships—with organizations such as the San Juan Preservation Trust\, Washington State Parks\, and the Samish Indian Nation Department of Natural Resources—have shaped both the process and outcomes of this work. \nLooking ahead\, we will share how this collaborative model is expanding into riparian and wetland restoration across the islands\, supported by new funding through the Washington State Conservation Commission. These upcoming efforts will focus on improving water quality\, groundwater storage\, wildlife\, and culturally important plant species. \nWhether you are a landowner\, practitioner\, or community member\, this talk offers a chance to learn how long-term partnerships\, shared stewardship\, and integrated restoration approaches are helping shape a more resilient ecological future in the San Juan Islands. \nThis meeting will be held in-person from 5:30pm to 7pm at the San Juan Islands Conservation District office located at 915 Spring Street\, Friday Harbor\, WA. Community members may also join virtually via Zoom. \nPlease click here to attend virtually via Zoom. \n*A field trip is scheduled for May 7 to tour the Mount Grant Preserve restoration site. Click here for more details and to register. \nContact tanjaw@sjclandbank.org or phone 360-370-7655 for more information.

SUMMARY:Partner Event | Afternoon Adventures - Seniors Nature Walk from Frazer Homestead Preserve to American Camp\, San Juan Island
DESCRIPTION:Get in touch with nature and its many benefits this summer! Land Bank staff member\, Tanja Williamson\, will lead a series of walks on Land Bank preserves across San Juan Island. These walks are geared towards seniors (60+) and great for the beginner to intermediate walker. \nWe leave from the Mullis Community Senior Center at 1pm. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring any water/snacks you may want for an enjoyable excursion. \nThis month is a special opportunity to learn about the federally endangered Island Marble Butterfly. Land Bank staff will offer a peek at the butterfly habitat they’ve created at Middlewood Preserve and will share the fascinating life history and story of this rare insect.  Then we’ll walk the American Camp Trail along Frazer Homestead Preserve to the American Camp visitor center\, with more opportunities to see butterfly habitat plots along the way. It’s unlikely\, though possible\, that we’ll even see an Island Marble Butterfly on the wing (binoculars are good for viewing). \nRegistration required to plan accordingly for transportation from the Mullis Center. Please contact Anna at info@mulliscenter.org or phone 360-370-4015 to register and let her know if you’ll be riding with the group or providing your own transportation.
