SUMMARY:Volunteer Event | Island Marble Butterfly Habitat Project at the Spit at Fisherman Bay Preserves
DESCRIPTION:Help is needed to prepare this year’s butterfly habitat plots at the Fisherman Bay Spit. Volunteers will assist stewardship staff in planting field mustard (Brassica rapa) and installing fencing around the plots.  \nThe Island Marble Butterfly (Euchloe ausonides) is a rare\, endemic butterfly. The US Fish and Wildlife Service listed the butterfly as an endangered species in 2020. Currently the only known population is located on San Juan Island. Public and private landowners are participating in recovery efforts to create new\, suitable habitat for the butterfly. The Land Bank implemented a “Moveable Feast” habitat project at three of its preserves\, two on San Juan and one at the Fisherman Bay Spit on Lopez. \nMeet at parking lot at the end of Chestnut Lane. This new trail is accessible only from Spencer Spit State Park’s existing trail system. This is an easy hike with very little elevation gain or loss with views facing Swifts Bay and Flower Island. Meet at Day Use picnic shelter and enjoy hot chocolate\, cider or tea before our hike! \nFirst Day Hikes in Washington offers an experience for everyone to get outside and enjoy our beautiful state parks by participating in ranger and staff-led hikes\, bike rides\, snowshoe excursions\, and more offered at 40+ parks on New Year’s Day. When you are done\, you may pick up your free\, collectible Washington State Parks 2024 First Day Hikes pin! \nAll hikes are free\, and a Discover Pass is NOT needed to park on state-managed lands on Jan. 1\, the first Washington State Parks Free Day of 2024. However\, you may need to register for some events with participation limits and/or purchase the appropriate Sno-Park permit. Be sure to read hike descriptions carefully and check the park’s event descriptions to make sure you are registered and have what you need.

DESCRIPTION:Help Steward Your Conservation Land Bank’s Turtleback Mountain Preserve! \nVolunteer alongside Land Bank and San Juan Preservation Trust staff as we take advantage of fall’s cooler days. DESCRIPTION:Beaverton Mash Preserve is the featured monthly walk for the San Juan Island Trails Committee Know Your Island Walk series. \nJoin Land Bank staff for an easy stroll around the preserve’s 2.5 (ish) loop. Engage your quads and your brain while learning about the site’s history and trails planning\, as well as some fun plant identification. It’s also a great opportunity to view San Juan’s fall foliage across the marsh. \nPreserve parking is limited to 10 cars. SUMMARY:Volunteer Event | Third Thursdays at Salish Seeds Project
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join other native plant lovers at the Salish Seeds Project nursery on San Juan Island every third Thursday of the month\, April – October.  Tasks vary by the season\, and can include weeding\, seeding\, thinning\, transplanting\, harvesting seed\, spreading woodchips\, pruning\, and watering.  Tools are provided\, but please bring gloves\, water\, and anything else you may need for the morning.  As an added bonus\, volunteers can take home any “orphan” plants on hand. \nThe Salish Seeds Project is a joint program of the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank and the San Juan Preservation Trust.
