SUMMARY:Reimagining Gardening with Natives and Near-natives
DESCRIPTION:Participants will learn the basics of how to garden with a diverse array of native and near-native wildflowers and grasses. Topics will include where to get plants and seeds; how and when and where to plant them; nurturing wildlife; and how to maximize sustainability/minimize plastics and resource use. \nAt the Family Resource Center Garden on San Juan Island\, designer Jenny Harris will share the creation of an unconventional\, wild-like garden that thrives in poor soil and sand.  At the Salish Seeds Project nursery\, nursery manager Eliza Habegger will introduce another cast of native plant characters and how to grow them at home.  The nursery also features a green/living roof planted exclusively with local species. \nLimited to 12 participants. DESCRIPTION:Take a reading adventure this Fall! For the month of November\, the San Juan County Land Bank and San Juan Island Library are hosting a Pop Up StoryWalk™ at Zylstra Lake Preserve featuring Thor Hanson’s Bartholomew Quill – A Crow’s Quest to Know Who’s Who. \nA StoryWalk™ is a creative way for children to enjoy the outdoors and read a book with their family and friends. Pages of a children’s book are put on signs and placed along the trail. Walk\, skip\, or hop along the trail and read the story\, step-by-step and page-by-page! \nFor a special treat\, Thor Hanson will lead a walk and read the story aloud Friday\, November 5. The event begins at 10am. Space is limited – please email youthservices@sjlib.org to register. A public shuttle\, courtesy of the San Juan Island Library\, will be provided to the program location. \nThe first StoryWalk™ Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier\, VT and developed in collaboration with the Rachel Senechal\, Kellogg Hubbard Library. DESCRIPTION:The San Juan County Land Bank and San Juan Islands Conservation District are teaming up for Washington’s annual Orca Recovery Day by planting Garry oak acorns and native prairie forbs on Turtleback Mountain Preserve. \nHow does planting trees help our Southern Resident orcas? Although this event seeks to raise awareness about this wonderous endangered species\, it also highlights the critical ecological connections between land and sea\, and the importance of supporting natural systems. \nSign up to join a “planting pod” below!
