DESCRIPTION:Geology Journey on Lopez Island\nThe rocks that form the San Juan Islands tell a complicated story that geologists are still learning to interpret. \nOne of the foremost experts on our local geology is retired USGS scientist and University of Washington faculty member\, John Whetten. John will lead a tour of three sites on Lopez Island—Richardson\, Watmough Bay\, and Point Colville—where you’ll see lava pillows\, fossiliferous mudstones\, 10\,000 year-old clams\, and colliding terranes along the Lopez Fault. \nA van will pick up non-Lopezians at the Lopez ferry landing at 10am and make a stop in Lopez village (location TBA) at about 10:15 am before beginning the tour. \nRSVP REQUIRED – please email tanjaw@sjclandbank.org if you’d like to attend. DESCRIPTION:Lopez Hill Preserve Commemoration\nNow that “The Hill” is officially protected\, officials are commemorating the historic event with a few special words. We’ll hear from Friends of Lopez Hill member Ann Palmer; San Juan County Council Member\, Jamie Stephens; Commissioner of Public Lands\, Hilary Franz; Senator Liz Lovelett; and Land Bank Director\, Lincoln Bormann. \nThere will be additional areas to park at the Preserve. Land Bank staff will be on site at 1:30pm to help with parking. Carpooling is recommended. Speakers begin at 2pm.
