Spring Street International School student, Nathan, recently completed an internship with the San Juan County Land Bank.
An Orcas Island resident, Nathan’s interest in natural history was a good match with the project he participated in on the Turtleback Mountain Preserve. As part of the Garry Oak woodlands restoration efforts, many seedling oaks have been caged to protect them from the devastation of deer browse. Nathan measured and tagged over 300 of the young trees, establishing a baseline of data that will be used to evaluate growth and survival over time. He also assisted Land Bank staff with planting native grasses for use in re-vegetating disturbed areas within the restoration units.
Big thanks and best wishes to Nathan!
