Have you wondered about what lichens are and why they are found on your trees, along the shorelines or split-rail fences? Rob Roy McGregor from the San Juan Preservation Trust breaks down the mysterious world of lichens on a guided walk around the Spit at Fisherman Bay Preserve.
Rob Roy will introduce what lichens are, how they fit into the ecosystem, where they grow, how they reproduce, and morphology that is important for identification. Focus will be on higher level classification rather than species level.
Many lichens require getting on hands and knees to view properly; please wear clothing you’re comfortable getting dirty. If you have a hand lens, please bring it along. There will also be some available to share.
