Fisherman Bay Preserve: The Tombolo
Lopez Island
Activities
Features
The 7-acre Tombolo Preserve protects approximately three quarters of a mile of shoreline. A tombolo is a long, narrow bar of sediment connecting an island to a larger island or mainland. This natural geologic feature acts as a buffer between San Juan Channel and Fisherman Bay. Its surrounding tidal flats and shoreline provide foraging grounds for numerous waterfowl and shorebirds and supports a diverse array of invertebrate and fish species. This Preserve was acquired in 2000 for its extraordinary ecological, scenic and public access values.

Trail Description
Its outer, western beach of sand and cobble is a local favorite for walking and wildlife watching and provides a clear view across San Juan Channel to San Juan Island. Its inner, eastern side protects a substantial tidal marsh, valued for its excellent birdwatching and for preserving vital scenic views across Fisherman Bay. There is a parking pullout at the northern end of the preserve, with space for three cars. Parking is also available at nearby Otis Perkins County Park.
