Geology Journey on Lopez Island
The rocks that form the San Juan Islands tell a complicated story that geologists are still learning to interpret.
One of the foremost experts on our local geology is retired USGS scientist and University of Washington faculty member, John Whetten. John will lead a tour of three sites on Lopez Island—Richardson, Watmough Bay, and Point Colville—where you’ll see lava pillows, fossiliferous mudstones, 10,000 year-old clams, and colliding terranes along the Lopez Fault.
A van will pick up non-Lopezians at the Lopez ferry landing at 10am and make a stop in Lopez village (location TBA) at about 10:15 am before beginning the tour.
RSVP REQUIRED – please email tanjaw@sjclandbank.org if you’d like to attend. (registration limited to 10). Further details will be emailed to registrants during the week before the event.
